What mould needs to grow
Spores are always in the air, so keeping them out is impossible. Removing the conditions they need is the realistic approach. Mould grows where moisture, suitable temperature and organic material meet β and moisture is the one we can control most easily. Mould is therefore a humidity problem more than a cleaning problem.
Safety before scrubbing
One safety rule matters above all: never mix chlorine bleach with acidic cleaners. The reaction releases toxic gas, which is genuinely dangerous in a sealed bathroom. Rinse thoroughly with water before switching products, keep windows and doors open while working, and wear gloves and a mask.
- Never mix chlorine and acidic cleaners β toxic gas
- Rinse thoroughly before switching products
- Ventilate while working; wear gloves and a mask
- Do not work long periods in a sealed space
Cleaning surface mould
On non-porous surfaces like tile and glass, wiping generally solves it. Apply cleaner, leave briefly, scrub, rinse well β and then dry completely. Leaving moisture behind brings it back in days. Porous materials such as silicone sealant and wallpaper retain filaments beneath the surface, so replacing the affected section is the only durable fix.
Humidity control prevents return
Change nothing after cleaning and it will come back. Squeegeeing a bathroom and leaving the door open already makes a large difference. Leaving a gap between furniture and walls reduces condensation. Winter condensation comes from the indoor-outdoor temperature gap, so frequent short bursts of strong ventilation beat leaving a window slightly open for hours.
- Bathroom: remove water and ventilate after use
- Furniture: leave a gap from the wall for airflow
- Ventilation: short, strong, cross-ventilated
- Drying laundry indoors: pair with dehumidifying or airing
When to call a professional
Water leaking inside a wall, or mould recurring across a large area, will not be solved at the surface. Leaks or insulation faults need a structural inspection. If anyone in the household has an allergic or respiratory reaction to mould, leave the work to specialists.
